Gender Action Guidelines

Body

Girls typically respond differently from boys to the incentives offered in life. This is a learned response resulting from a whole lifetime of different 'nudges' received or perceived from family, friends and society. We can't change this. But within the PHABLABS 4.0 projects we aim to work WITH it so that girls receive the same opportunities as boys.

Special attention will be given to create gender-sensitive material for the “Photonics Workshops” and “Photonics Challenger Projects” that they gain the interest of girls and have a lasting impact on their personal relation to science, technology and Fab Labs. For this the developers are supported by the Gender Action Team.

This Gender Action Team, consists of several professionals like Prof. Averil MacDonald from WISE (Women’s International Studies Europe). One of the responsibilities of the Gender Action Team was to make an inventory of considerations to be taken into account during the design phase. This document is ready and every partner can use it to develop the Photonics Workshop and Photonics Challenger project. This inventory is made public so everyone can use this.

The following responisbility of the Gender Action Team is to give the pilot fab labs in this project a training on how to approach girls during workshops in the fab lab. This training will be given during the next consortium meeting in June 2017. All material about this will then be made available on this website.
