Building a smartphone-controlled RGB-LED-lamp

Body

In this very first workshop, students between 11 and 16 years of age built a smartphone/WLAN controlled RGB-lamp. This project was based on the ESP8266, which is an Arduino-like programmable platform with WLAN capabilities.  The students first built peripheral electronics around the ESP8266, connected everything to red, green and blue high power LEDs and uploaded the program provided by PhabLabs4.0 to the ESP.  They also cut their own device enclose from wood panels using a laser cutter. Everyone, including ourselves, learnt a lot from this workshop, which was very well received by students and teachers.  We will include all feedback in our concepts for the workshops to come.
